Origins

As Korea is entering a post-crisis period, its development paradigm seems to be changing. People who are shocked by the enormous cost of the old system are in favor of a comprehensive plan for liberalization of labor, capital and markets for products. On the other hand supporters of the old system are seeking to keep it in place by leveraging nationalist sentiments and inflating fears over potential job losses.

Analysts and academics are divided over the extent to which Korea's growth is being driven by these two trends. This article assesses the latest developments by analyzing five phases of Korea's political evolution that include the illiberal democratic period (1945-60) democratic authoritarianism (1961-72) authoritarian exceptionalism (1972-87), democratic paternalism (1987-2001), and democratic participation (2002 to present). This article also identifies some important factors that appear to influence these processes.

Creationism in Korea

In South Korea, 26% of the population is Christian. Creationists have made progress in promoting their beliefs to this segment. A 2009 survey revealed that nearly three-quarters of respondents did not believe in the theory of evolution. Of the respondents, 41% stated that there was not enough evidence from science to support the theory 39% claimed that the theory was in contradiction to their religious beliefs and 17% claimed it was difficult to comprehend.
