How to Replace an audi key shell G28 Engine Speed Sensor

The sensor is located near the edges of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through a grey wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 using an uncolored wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can trigger spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails the ECU will throw the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync, possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. The code won't show without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

Testing can be a bit difficult as there are two different connector pins, and they perform different functions but the best method to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully functional, it should read about 1000 ohms. Look for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at maximum speed, i noticed a huge reduction in power. It was like the engine was running out of gas. Or, my injectors weren't firing. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, three were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was dry. I put tissue over each injector hole, and when i start the engine without sparks, the 3 that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one stays closed. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I assume that the problem is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car can start if the G28 is unplugged and is running fine when it is connected, but still has intermittent misfire issues at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even if it is not plugged in, shows a temperature of -49c. Also, i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit shows 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.

I'm not sure what to do. I feel like i've pretty much eliminated everything else. But i am afraid i might have missed something. Let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find the spare in a salvage shop or parts store. It is simple to test them - put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and Key Audi (Http://Bridgehome.Cn) 2 (2nd from left on the black end of the connector). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU in our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines requires to know the speed and position of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of fuel injectors, etc. To accomplish this, it makes use of a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28).
