How to Replace an audi key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the outside of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends signals through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to control fuel and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can trigger spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails to function, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of an issue with the chain or a jumpy chain link in the upper chain. The code won't show without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It's a bit tricky to test as there are various connector pins, and each has its own functions. The best way to do it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read approximately 1000 ohms when it is in full operation. Look for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll i had a big cut in power like the engine is running out of gas or injectors aren't firing anymore. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked with gasoline and the fourth was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole, and when I start the engine without sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one remains closed. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I got zero Ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is in another place.

I also tried to reset PID without success. The car key cover audi can start if the G28 is not plugged in and runs fine when it is plugged in but it still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for the coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of that is -49c even after unplugging it. Also i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, i think i've pretty much completely ruled out all other possibilities. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please share them! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate an extra in a wrecking shop or a parts store. It is simple to test them to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black end of the connector). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines needs to know the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about fuel injector timing, etc. It uses a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. If either of these goes badly, you will see codes on the diagnostic scanner that can cause the engine to shut down.

Some of the symptoms of a malfunctioning G28 sensor include an inaccurate gearbox rev counter the gears are shifting faster than normal, and/or a misfire when you're in gear. If you are experiencing any of these issues, it is most likely that your sensor is failing and should be replaced. The good thing is that they are very affordable and readily available, especially if you're looking at the Bosch unit like ours. Alternatively, GM's version of this component is a good option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be the reason behind a slew of issues in your vehicle. It's a vital component of the audi a3 key replacement's transmission because it communicates to the ECU about how fast or slow the vehicle's crankshaft is turning. The G5 engine sensor is located at the outskirts of the transmission, over the flywheel ring. It sends signals via an uncolored wire to the ECU pin T55/49.
