Charles the Humble Technician shows how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located on the outside of the transmission over the flywheel gear. It sends a message to the ECU through the grey wire T55/49 and then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located on the edge of transmission, just above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an alert to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can activate spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jumpy chain link in the upper chain. The code won't appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test since there are several pins on the connector, and each one has different functions. The most effective method to test it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read around 1000 ohms when it is at full operation. If you are having problems with this part, check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, I experienced a big cut in power as if the engine was running out of gas or injectors aren't firing anymore. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, three were drenched in gasoline and the 4th was dry. I placed a tissue over each hole in the injector and when i start the engine without sparks, the three with gazoline jump out. The fourth one remains closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I get zero Ohm. I think the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it works fine when the G28 connected. However, the intermittent misfire problem still occurs at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when it is unplugged, shows temperatures of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar but the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not sure what to do, but i think i've pretty much eliminated everything else. But i am afraid i might have missed something. Let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The GM-style sensor is the same as the G4 and both are used in the 80, 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a salvage yard or in a local parts store. Testing them is easy by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black end of the connector). They should be infinite ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that needs to know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injector, for example. To do this, it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you are experiencing issues with either one of these, the diagnostic scanner will display codes that could lead to the engine shutting down.

Some of the signs of a failed G28 sensor include an inaccurate rev counter in the gearbox, gears shifting quicker than normal, and/or a misfire when you are in gear. If you experience any of these issues, it is likely your sensor is deteriorating and requires replacement. The good news is that they are very cheap and easily accessible particularly in the case of an Bosch model, like ours. Alternately, the GM version of this unit is also a great option.

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be a cause for many issues with your car. It's a vital component of the audi keyless go's transmission because it communicates to the ECU about how fast or slow the car's crankshaft is turning. You can also verify continuity between pin T55/49 of the ECU and pin T6a/1 of the instrument cluster (trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and pin T26a/12. You should see approximately 1000 ohms of resistance between those points.
