Overview
Imperial retains its place at the head of our university ranking for a second year, pulling further clear of Oxford and Cambridge. In the past 12 months, it has also become the top-ranked British institution (and second globally) in the 2025 edition of the QS World University Rankings. Imperial recruits the best students from around the world in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, medicine and business (or STEMMB as it likes to call it). We named it University of the Year last year off the back of its rankings success, but the wider reasons for the award remain as true today as they were 12 months ago. These include the university's strong social conscience. It takes widening access seriously, with one of the most progressive bursary programmes in the UK. It also makes reduced offers to students who qualify under its contextual admissions criteria, which have been beefed up this year. The university is based in South Kensington, on a campus adjacent to the capital's museum district, and has nine other sites around the capital. Imperial's graduates are in demand, with more going into highly skilled jobs than those from any other university, and commanding the highest salaries, too.

Paying the bills
British students enrolling at Imperial this month will be the first to benefit from the newly increased Imperial bursary rates, with the scheme extended to support students from homes with an income of up to £70,000 - the highest income level to earn financial support at any university in our ranking. The university introduced the new £1,000-a-year bursary for the £60,001 to £70,000 income band in response to the cost-of-living crisis. It has also increased the bursary sum by 10% for income bands £55,001 to £60,000 (£2,200 annual bursary), £50,001 to £55,000 (£3,300) and £16,001 to £50,000 (£4,400). A payment of £5,000 a year is made to students from homes with an income of £16,000 or less. Even before the introduction of the new bursary band, just over 40% of UK undergraduates received a bursary. There is further aid available to care leavers, estranged students and those of black heritage, plus several departmental scholarships. Imperial has raised its accommodation prices by between 2.2% and 3.1% this year. It means the cheapest twin ensuite rooms now cost £5,304 for a 39-week tenancy, which is considerably cheaper than a number of northern universities. Standard single rooms come in at £8,229 for 39 weeks.

Imperial now performs more strongly than most of its London rivals in the annual survey, particularly in questions relating to teaching excellence and student experience. The Imperial Experience, a multi-year project launched a year ago, is consulting students about future investment in student-facing services, which should preserve the upturn in the scores. Recent campus upgrades include an increase in the number of study spaces (one of the most common gripes in all universities) in the Abdus Salam library on the main campus. Imperial has also launched the Student Space at the heart of the campus, which provides facilities for wbc247주소 group work, socialising and relaxing. The start of the new academic year will also see the opening of new undergraduate teaching facilities for business students. This follows on from recent upgrades for science, engineering and medicine students to their teaching, study, social, sports and hospitality facilities. Admissions requirements are among the very highest, but a new institution-wide approach to contextual offer making has been introduced for September 2025. In essence, students meeting the criteria, published in full on the university's website, will receive an offer at the minimum level - in most instances AAA at A-level - subject to demonstrating motivation through responses to the new questions on their Ucas form that replace the personal statement and achieving above the minimum score in any departmental admissions tests or interviews. There is a network of support open to students, centred on personal and academic tutoring in all departments. Targeted support is also extensive. For example, Imperial runs a specific careers event for autistic students and a careers consultant dedicated to supporting students from a widening participation background was recruited last month. Mental health support is distinctive. Through its Concerned About A Student report form, Imperial provides a route for students to get mental health and wellbeing support for either themselves or a fellow student they are (anonymously) concerned about. Action is initiated by the student mental health intervention team, which was set up in 2022 in response to the growing mental health epidemic in universities. The team operates within the wider student counselling and mental health advice service, providing one-to-one support as well as offering self-help provision and multi-week group workshops. These include a mindfulness-based stress reduction group and a compassion-focused therapeutic group. Mental health first-aiders can be found across campus, identified by distinctive green lanyards. Hall warden and support teams in Imperial's halls of residence have been trained in mental health skills, and personal tutors have a mandatory training workshop with a large focus on mental health.
