How to Replace an replacement audi key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician teaches how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located near the edges of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU then uses this information to control the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends an indicator to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can activate spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails the ECU will display the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync, possibly indicating the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. However the code will not appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit challenging because there are two connector pins, and they perform different functions but the most effective way to test it is by measuring resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully operational, it should read around 1000 ohms. Examine for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if you have issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll, I experienced an abrupt drop in power like the engine is out of gas or injectors are not firing any more. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, three were soaked with gazoline and the fourth was dry. I put tissue over each hole in the injector and when I start the engine without sparks, the three with gazoline jump out. The 4th one stays shut. I checked the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got 0ohm. So i assume the problem is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID with no success. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged, and it is running fine with the G28 plugged in. However the intermittent misfire issue continues to occur at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when it is unplugged, shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, as i believe that i've completely ruled out all other possibilities. However, i'm afraid that I may have missed something. Let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is similar to the G4 sender and works on the 80,100,200, audi keyless entry UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find an extra in a wrecking shop or a parts store. It is easy to test them - just switch your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing up). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY ADU) engines needs to know the speed and position of the crankshaft to determine fuel injector timing, etc. To accomplish this, it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you encounter a problem with either of these sensors, the diagnostic scanner will show the codes that could trigger the engine shutting down.

A damaged G28 sensor can cause an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox or a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, and/or an unfire when in the gear. It is probable that your sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you encounter any of these signs. The good thing is that they are very affordable and readily available, especially in the case of the Bosch unit which is what we have. Alternatively, the GM version of this part is also a good option.

5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be the cause of a slew of problems in your vehicle.
