Buying a Double Buggy From Birth

When you are deciding on the perfect double buggy, there are many things to take into consideration. We spoke with Fourth Trimester postnatal retreat expert Katie Billingsley for her advice on everything from seating options to age ranges to folding mechanisms and storage space.

A must-have purchase for active families, this buggy grows with your family from twins to toddlers. It's lightweight and movable, and is able to handle uneven terrain easily.

What type of buggy do you want?

A double buggy is perfect for transporting two children, not necessarily of the same age, side-by-side. They can also be used as prams. Each seat has an adjustable mechanism so that your children can lie down or sit in different positions. A lot of them have plenty of storage space for everything from drinks and snacks to nappies and wipes. Often they're lightweight double stroller, fold up easily and are small enough to fit into your car boot. If you're someone who drives a lot, it's important to make sure the buggy's maneuverability with the folded wheels and to take out and into your car boot.

You might have seen this kind of double buggy on other mums strollers, or even in one as a child. These are great for older siblings who want to keep up with you, or for twins. They usually have many seating configurations (including "cinema" seats) for your little ones to pick from. These are usually easy to control, and if select a model that has a soft suspension, they can easily handle kerbs.

Tandem buggies are also a popular option since they're more maneuverable than a side-by-side. The second seat is positioned behind the first, rather than on top. The seats are usually larger and heavier than a side-by-side and you must ensure whether they are able to pass through doors or on public transport. They can be used for twins or a toddler and a baby or three kids with the addition of a buggy board.

Lastly there are the'single-to-double' convertibles which can be used as a single pushchair double from birth then convert to a double by attaching a second seat, carrycot or car seat to their clever frame. They tend to be more expensive than side-by-sides and tandem buggies, but they offer a lot of flexibility and a high resale value. They are easy to steer and come with a large storage basket. They are also able to handle uneven surfaces. Some have a built in ride-on board for older children and 'cinema seats'.

Do you have twins?

Double buggys are the ideal way to transport your children, regardless of whether they are twins or older siblings. There are two types of double buggy - side-byside buggies that let your children sit together and tandem buggies in which one child is placed above the other. Both can accommodate two fixed seats, however side-by-side buggies are typically narrower in width for getting through doors. Tandems tend to be larger in general. They can also be able to accommodate seats for toddlers and a carrycot.

Do you have a toddler?

Having a younger sibling can feel like quite a big responsibility at first, especially when you must tend to the infant. They might be feeling a little secluded if they are placed in a baby carrier while you push the older one along and so having a double buggy from the start can make things easier. It will also give your child the feeling of pride that comes with knowing that they get to be 'big brother or sister' and help them adjust to their new role.

The side-by-side double buggies could be a great choice for twins, as each child will get the same view. However they are heavy and heavy. Do you require a travel system?

If you choose to purchase a double buggy there are three types to choose from: side by side or tandem, and convertible. Before you invest in a double stroller, consider the factors mentioned above and your family's specific circumstances. Having a sturdy and reliable double stroller will simplify your life particularly if you have to travel through busy streets or crowded shopping centres.
