How to Replace an audi a3 spare key G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video, Charles the humble mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is located on the outside of the transmission over the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via a grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

Hyundai.jpg1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 through the grey wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can activate spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This indicates that the Crank Shaft is out of alignment with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jumpy chain link in the upper chain. However, the code won't be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test as there are various pins on the connector, and they all have different functions. The best way to do it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read around 1000 ohms when the sensor is at full operation. If you're having issues with this part, check for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, i experienced a big cut in power like the engine is running out of gas or injectors aren't firing any more. I took out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were drenched in gasoline and audi spare keys the 4th was dry. I put tissue over each hole in the injector and when i start the engine with no sparks, the ones that have gazoline pop right out. The 4th one remains closed. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55,30/55 and 48/55 I got zero ohm. I assume that the problem is in another location.

I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it is running fine with the G28 connected. However the intermittent misfire issue still occurs at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar when the actual pressure is zero.

I'm not sure what to do, i feel i have pretty much eliminated everything else. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. If anyone has suggestions, please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 can be activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is the same as the G4 and both function in the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a salvage yard or at a parts store. It is simple to test them - simply put your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector's end facing upwards). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines needs to know the position and speed the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of fuel injectors, etc. To accomplish this, it uses a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If either of these audi keyless go bad you will get codes on the diagnostic scanner which can lead to engine shutdown.

A damaged G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate speed counter for your gearbox, a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, and/or an unfire when in gear. It is probable that the sensor is failing and needs to be replaced if you experience any of these signs. The good news is they are quite affordable and easy to find particularly when you're looking at the Bosch sensor, like ours. Alternately, GM's version this part is a good option.

5. Tachometer

A failing engine speed sensor could be a cause for a slew of issues with your vehicle. It's an essential component of your audi tt replacement key tt key case (Suggested Looking at)'s transmission, because it communicates to the ECU about how fast or slow the vehicle's crankshaft is turning. If this sensor fails, it will affect the performance of the transmission and the other car's components.

Subaru-logo.pngThe G5 engine sensor is located at the outskirts of the transmission, just above the flywheel ring. It sends an electrical signal through a gray wire to the ECU pin T55/49. The ECU uses this signal to regulate fuel and boost, as well as timig. It also sends it to the G5 Tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for failure by examining the continuity between it and the tachometer, between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection via pin T6a/1 (trace [79trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. It should show around 1000 ohms of resistance between those two pins. This is a common feature across the replacement audi keys 80-100-200-RS2 series, starting from the 1985 MC all the way up to the 1997 UrS AN and the 1995 RS2 Du, so you might find some good ones in wrecking yards.
