Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album is an ode to the classic sextet structure and it was a more consistent, more powerful effort with a harder edge. Its more punk-rock sound was indicative of the maturation of group and featured drummer Bobby Kimball's increased virtuosity on drums, and an improved, mature vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's keyboard work was also more sophisticated, sharper, and less derivative on earlier efforts.

After touring to promote their album, the group recorded the band's Amsterdam live concert that was released by Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. The studio album came out shortly after, and the group embarked on a long-distance tour to promote it. During this period, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes replaced Paich and bassist David Hungate quit the group to spend time with his family.

In 1998, Paich and Lukather started looking through old demos and tapes in search of a new album featuring songs that had never been recorded before. It was completed in 2001 and released as a double album titled Then and Now. It was the band's first album without a single song titled "A". By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity.
