Before the formation of Toto the group, members worked as sessions for other musicians. Drummer Jeff Porcaro, bassist David Hungate and keyboardist David Paich (the son of session percussionist Marty Paich and brother of guitarist Joe Porcaro) played on Boz Scaggs' 1975 album Silk Degrees. Toto was formed in the year 1976 in the wake of the collaboration.

The band's third album, Turn Back, marked a change from the more progressive sound of their earlier albums and was criticized for its absence of hit singles.
